We left Teplice early on Sunday morning by mini bus to Krakow via Auschwitz & Birkenau.  Having read many books and watched many documentaries about Nazi Germany and the genocide, I thought I would be prepared for what to come.  In a way I was - I could smell death but the scale of the camps overwhelmed me.  I don't think I was as affected by it as some - partly because members of my family had lived through wars (WWII + Vietnam) but seeing a room full of human hair, or a room full of baby clothes would bring a tear to anyone's eye. While it's not the same as ethnic cleansing, it's strangely reminded of Japanese and the atrocity it did to the Chinese and Koreans during WWII.  The question that I kept asking myself was - why.
On the other hand, Krakow was great!  It's definitely one of the highlights of the trip so far.  It's a compact little city yet with big('ish) city feel. Extremely easy to nagviate with a large university age crowd and lots of places / things to explore.  It also has a huge square (200m x 200m) with lots of stalls, cafes and buskers. Definitely worth a visit soon - before it becomes too popular.  Let's hope it won't become another destination for stag parties...
