After six weeks in São Carlos it was time to hit the road again.  The flight to Buenos Aires was out of Guarulhos so why not take a quick look round the Southern Hemisphere's most populous city (and of course see the real Avenida Paulista).  Here's a pic taken from my lodgings on the first evening in town.

MASP (São Paulo Museum of Art) is certainly worth a visit although of course photography inside is strictly verboten.

The following day I headed out on patrol.  Unfortunately the blue sky of the day before had disappeared but at least the rain flushes out the budget umbrella salesmen.  I emerged from the Metro at Republica.

I set out on foot for the Cathedral, hoping that it was equipped with a lightning conductor capable of handling a high amperage...

Here are some shots of the cathedral.  I always feel like such a heathen when visiting cathedrals...

Outside the Cathedral I was reminded of first line of The Atheist's Prayer (Lord, delivereth me from the attentions of your over-zealous servants) and wondered if the bishop in the stature was getting a prostate exam.  On second thoughts perhaps I should have dropped into that confessional for thinking all these unholy thoughts.  Excommunication isn't as quite as scary as it used to be but I reckon that an auto da fé would still be pretty unpleasant.

The São Paulo Metro is clean, efficient and inexpensive and in contrast with the London Underground I was not accosted by any beggars.  Here are some pics taken on the way back.

São Paulo has some attractive modern buildings.  Although these are not to everybody's taste I rather liked them. Unfortunately the sun from the previous day (when I was indoors at MASP) had completely disappeared.
