We arrived in Johannesburg on Friday 13th and stayed at the Drifters Inn for 2 nights. Didn't do to much just caught up on washing and sleep. Did some grocery shopping at the local Spar Supermarket in preparation for our 5 day African Safari. We enjoyed the amazing cooking at the Inn including Inch thick steaks with vegies/pototoes and mushroom sauce for $10 AUD.

Day 1 the Safari begins... After an early 5.30am wake up call and a quick breakfast we were on the road and leaving Johannesburg. There is 11 other people on our tour, 5 Norwegian girls, 3 German Girls, 1 German Guy, 1 Canadian Girl and 1 Canadian Guy and our South African guide Peter. We drove until midday and stopped at the historic tourist town of Pilgrims Rest for lunch. We ate lunch at a Colonial Style restaurant which had good cheap food.

After lunch we headed to the majestic Blyde River Canyon area, first stop was the Bourkes Luck Potholes (see pictures). The holes are formed by a retreating waterfall and people throw coins for good luck into a particular pot hole.

We then drove further on to the Blyde River Canyon and three Rondavells (see photos). This place was spectacular. The three rondavells mountains are named after the shape of the traditional African huts.

After many photos it was back to the bus to drive down the Drakensburg Escarpement to the lowveld (low lying area) and onto the Drifters Camp at Balula Reserve. Our huts are tents built on stilts with a thatched roof overlooking a lit waterhole and a large open game area. Tonight we had a traditional South Africa Braai (bbq) for dinner which was delicious.
