Arrived in Cairns last night - very hot, very humid and very tropical, in fact we had to remain in the airplane on the tarmac for 1.5 hours while a lightening storm passed over - very common at this time of the year, but usually over quite quickly - thank goodness! Cairns is a lot bigger than we expected and all geared up for visitors who are here mainly to take trips to the Great Barrier Reef.
Picked up the campervan this morning and it is just the job, plus we have air conditioning this time - which is a real bonus in this heat.
Drove north and not too far out of Cairns to a small beach resort called Palm Cove. Very nice place though along the beach are notices advising people not to go into the water between November and May due to poisonous jelly fish and also to be aware of possibly coming across salt water crocodiles that live in and around these waters.
We actually got to see a young poisonous jelly fish as two lifeguards were monitoring the water and examining what they had found (the lifeguard who went into the water was completely covered from top to bottom in a protective 'stinger' suit). They had one very small jelly fish that was no bigger than my finger nail but can apparently put a healthy person in intensive care with one sting.
Total Kms 33 today.

Hi welcome to Australia,
Did you also notice the bottles of vinegar they have on the beaches just in case you get stung. Make sure you hire the stinger suits if you do go diving in the reef, very attractive but you have a good laugh at each other see you soon. Tickets have arrived for the Grand Prix
