Set off early this morning to drive approx 80 Kms to Whakatane as we had booked to go on a boat trip to visit White Island - an active volcano 49 Kms off the coast. En-route we received a phone call advising us the boat trip had been cancelled due to bad weather out at sea.

So we drove inland to Rotorua - a town you smell before you see!

Rotorua is a popular destination mainly due to the abundant geothermal activity resulting in numerous erupting geysers, thermal pools and steam vents - hence the strong smell of sulphur everywhere, though you soon get used to it.

As well as the visiting the geysers etc - strange landscapes - we also went to a Mauri Cultural Centre and saw our first and probably last kiwi, as not normally seen in the wild as they are both nocturnal and declining in numbers.

The bad weather finally caught up with us mid-afternoon which curtailed our activities so had a nod while waiting for the rain to pass, then went exploring the town in the drizzle - roll on sunshine again!!

Travelled 99 Kms today.
