Regarding our destination today we took advise from a very nice couple, Pete and Heather from Auckland, who we met last night and who invited us to have a drink with them.

They have a permanent unit on the site we stayed at, and use it for weekends and holidays. This seems to be quite a popular thing to do, as we have noticed this on all the sites we have been on so far and who can blame them - what a nice way to spend leisure time!

Pete and Heather gave us lots of tips including travelling up the Coromandel Peninsula, we had intended to go part way up but not as far as they advised.

So glad we took their advice - arrived at the town of Coromandel after an impressive drive along a very rugged coastline - sometimes hugging the coastline and sometimes me hugging my seat as we travelled up and round hairpin bends with sheer drops - but the views were worth it!

We are staying at a lovely and peaceful beachside location.

Everywhere is so quiet but we have been informed that from Boxing day onwards a lot of New Zealanders take their summer holidays and therefore things will get a lot busier. The kids are off school until the end of January.

Went into the town of Coromandel - not overly impressed but maybe that was due to the weather which has took a temporary turn for the worse late this afternoon.

Travelled 210 Kms today.

Really enjoying reading ur blog Elaine, and it really captures my own first impressions when I trekked much of the same route as you guys 11 yrs ago...always love coming back for all the things you mention, stunning views, friendly people and great pies - have u tried them yet Pete?? And now on my 27th visit can you believe... and I still haven't been to the South Island yet!! Now Greta is nearly 9, reckon we could make that trip anytime and she's a real trooper when it comes to camping and keeps me on my toes 24/7! Catch up with you soon!
