Drove out this morning to Carlsbad Caverns and was lucky enough to get last minute tour tickets down the Left Hand Passage, a very moderate candlelit journey with good opportunities for the ranger to describe the formation of the caverns, the various types of "decorations" and the underground ecosystem. After the tour I walked around the electrically (but tastefully) lit Big Room and then decided to hike back up the eighty stories or so of the Natural Entrance. Daylight never looked so sweet as at the end of that climb.

The road part of the day was mostly long and boring. US 285 to I-10 past ranch land and oilfields on 70 and 80mph roads. The last leg on US 280 at least had some hills and towns.

Austin definitely lives up to its reputation, with horse- and bicycle- drawn rickshaws carting people too drunk or lazy to walk past half naked guitarists in drag and hundreds of partiers on the rooftops of bars, clubs and music venues.

Tomorrow is my first "domestic day", and I'm looking forward to relaxing in one place, doing laundry, and figuring out how to get these photos and videos to work.
