Where I stayed
Off the train from Florence and now a short drive to the hotel ...4 weeks without an incident was expecting too much. The quoted price of 25-28Euro by taxi from the train station to the hotel seemed a little expensive and Jen's advice to ask a station security guard went unheeded. The short trip was dotted with pleasant conversation and seemed like a 15-20 Euro fare, though it was strange that the meter had switched off somewhere mid-trip. Then the con: the 20 and 10 Euro notes I thought I handed over (so did Jen) was rejected as a 5 and 10 combination!! All I remember was a momentary shuffle when I handed the notes over and thought something was unusual, but was unsure. One of those moments where you are slighty unsure and "off balance" wondering about directions and accept the rejection in good faith.
Turns out the land of the Ferrari can be fast in other ways.
To make matters worse we were deposited at the Hotel Trevi, not the Boutique Trevi Hotel so we has to walk 200m through the Trevi Fountain crowds with full luggage, wheels groaning as they rolled along the paved walkway.
Undeterred, with an afternoon available, we made use of the brilliant sunshine and wandered with no intention and no expectation. Ended up walking around parts of the ancient city, seeing the Monument to Emanuele, the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantino. Returning to the Trevi Fountain mid-evening to soak up the atmosphere with hundreds of other local and tourists. Truly wonderful.

Boo hoo! At least you're sounding philosophical about it!
We were swindled in Italy as well, in a similar fashion, but at a little shop buying a soft drink in Florence.
