20th September - To Osh

Today is the end of Ramadan. I leave the Zinaida family laden with bread, fruit and sweets. I could easily stay a month here. I rejoin the road to Osh at Bazar Korgon back on the plain and it is a series of short climbs through pastureland and descents back down to the plains. People selling melons, gourds, squashes, pumpkins line the road near the towns and villages. And then Osh. I get my usual "do I really want to be in a city feeling?" All I need is one thing to go wrong and I'll be on my way south.

I find the CBT office but Talant is away. He is contacted by phone and tries to book my in to a homestay but there is no reply. There is another but it is some way out of town. I thank the helpful young man and say I will try and find a hotel in town but not before I am quizzed about Irish dancing and its music with a little demonstration. This is the second time in a few days that Irish dancing has been praised. The answer to your question is... Leonard DiCaprio and Titanic! His Irish dance clearly fired the imagination of some Central Asian folk.

I head off to the homestay on the offchance and lo and behold one of the sons is home. He contacts his mother and I have a room, and what a room! It is a huge dining room with a 16 place table, two beds and 5 settees. It looks like I will be in Osh for a couple of days. I have a delicious Pakistani curry later in the evening. I fail to make telephone contact with Sandy. I can hear her but I can't talk to her!!!
