Been fighting the government all day? Trouble keeping the locals in line? So much resistance to do, so little time? Well, even you need a break from it all, so come on down to Restaurante La Cabaņa where you can enjoy a truly great meal at a reasonable price and when you're ready to leave, no need for a tip, just take the place hostage...which is exactly what happened about 7 years ago.
Monica, Viv and Jess' cousin, was relating the story to us out in the parking lot, after dinner, as we were heading to the cars. We didn't hang around long. The Colombian mountains are a decadence of greenery but it's a free for all getting there. Another little tidbit, we were advised the rebels used to close the roads, exacting tolls from would be passerbys until the government got wise and closed them down.
The further north you drive, the city and its parade of motorcycles, taxis, buses and honking begin to drift away. It's like your climbing through a cloud of noise pollution and you can see the vapors drifting away. The lusciousness of the greenery is a sharp contrast to the city that lays below. The city of Cali lays at the base of several mountains giving way to steep valleys. Certain souls are willing to turn their back on the city and live in the valleys. A steep two lane road with several switchbacks is the only way to get to the restaurant. Its similar to a gondola ride at a ski lodge, only you're in a car and at the top you don't ski, you eat.
Well worth the trip; the food was incredible. Similar to a barbecue joint back in the states when you do something well, then that's all you need to do. Everything is exquisitely grilled and there is tons of it. For four us it was roughly 80,000 pesos, which is like $12.00. I kid, its like $40.00.
