Plan was to drive as far as Crater Lake National Park but was obvious fairly early in the piece that we were never going to make it that far and looking at the Lonely Planet Guide it may not even be possible to go there at all as this early in summer the road there can be closed due to snow. So we aimed for Bend it looking to be the biggest place on the road we are travelling.
First stop was to Walmart to stock up on drinks and pick up some salads and sandwiches for lunch, also picked up an extra suitcase each for the accumulation of junk we have acquired - ours fits in our current bags but they are way overweight for the airline.
Another change in scenery almost scrubby desert looking most of the way dominated by massive snow top mountains in the distance. We were travelling at altitude most of the day and went up and down some pretty big hills.
Stopped at a place called Maryhill as we saw a sign for a museum and needed a loo, turned out to be a mansion some guy called Sam Hill had built and his wife had refused to live in which has since been turned into an art museum, made use of the facilities, had a wander round the museum and then sat outside in the beautiful grounds and had a picnic lunch.
Back on the road and we arrived in Bend around 4ish, Andrea and Garry wanted to go to a Best Buy and so found one at a strip mall as we arrived into town, so they did that while Stephen and I had a wander round JC Penney. In the end of course we spent an hour or two wandering about buying more rubbish for the suitcases!
Couldn't find the Best Western immediately and decided to try a Garden Inn, which was full, then moved on and found a La Quinta. Stephen got out and got a price, was a little more than we have been paying for hotels of the same quality so we asked to look at a room. The room she showed Stephen and I was massive, with only one queen bed but such a big room and the place had a pool and breakfast so thought ok. After checking in and getting our keys we headed to our rooms, we were given the big room we had been shown.....Andrea and Garry's room which they had paid the same for was crap....quarter of the size! They went and negotiated a small discount but pretty annoyed at the deception. In reality the hotel sux, we were above the breakfast room and could all but hear people chew their food, there is no lift and we heard people tot up and down the stairs all night. The pool was cold and the pillows are silly half size rubbish....won't be looking for another one of these in a hurry!
Somewhere we are going to get a good night sleep, might be my own bed in about 12 days!
