Itīs been four days since our horse riding adventure and Oscar is still complaining about his butt, so we have decided to re- name the last travel blog RAW-HIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has, however, been a great four days.
We found a company in tupiza called Valle Hermosa that did the 4 day 4wd trek to the Salar de Uyuni- these huge dried up salt lakes that are as surreal as any Dali painting. speaking of whom we also drove through the Dali desert ...really eerie.
We were coupled up with 2 Argentinians and an American. luckily we all got on really well.On the first day we drove through amazing mountain scenery with ,what can only be described as, death defying corners, luckily for us our driver was sober ,unlike others we had met,so we managed to get to our first hostel safe and sound.

                                                           the jeeps

They had prepared us for the trip really well ,telling us to bring sleeping bags, torches ,toilet paper, sunscreen the list went on and on, what they forgot to mention, however, was the fact that on the first day we were climbing to an altitude of 4800meters. and that we were all to share the same room. usually not a problem but when one of our Argentinian companions developed a serious case of altitude sickness ,starting close to his bed and ending in a pile at the entrance to our room, we started to think twice.
The altitude didnīt really affect Oscar and I ,apart from the odd fit off giggles for no apparent reason.
The second day we drove to ghost town that was deserted 20 years ago because of a combination of the high altitude, the cold and the fact that many of their people had died mining and they believed the town was cursed. Much to the dismay of our vomiting Argentinian ,this town was at 5200 meters.Have to admit even a small climb was exhausting.Later in the day we arrived at the hot springs and had a well earned dip.

Our hostel for that night was basic but fine, again no running water and really bloody cold. The fact that these slightly smaller locals donīt cater for the dutch size meant that oscar woke up with two blue feet hanging over the edge of the bed ,funnily enough I didnīt have that problem.
The third day was full of colored lakes, geysers and a very impressive and live volcano, where we had lunch in a spot that would have been a bit hotter to sit on 10000 years before.

That night we stayed in a fantastic hostel made entirely of salt and I mean entirely. The walls, tables, beds stools and even the floor was salt -we know this for a fact because after two bottles of wine oscar and I both decided to prove the point by licking the walls, a somewhat dehydrating experience but at least we got to the truth of the matter. The night sky at this place was also unbelievable, we have never seen so many stars ,even the milky way was clear.

Our fourth and final day of the trek began at 4am so that we could witness the gorgeous sunrise over a cactus filled islandĻ in the middle if the salt lake.Talk about a humbling experience it really makes you realize how small we humans are.

That brings us up to date.we are currently sitting in an internet shop in Uyuni waiting for the train to Ororu ,that leaves at midnight and takes around 9 hours, after which we hope to grab a bus for 3 or 4 hours to La Paz, the capital of Bolivia.Wish us luck!!
ps I bought my first poncho!!!!!!!!

he you
