Arrived at hotel after having called Tom from Dubai and told him to contact Commonwealth bank and see what was going on w/ my bank cards. Of course they told him when travelling overseas one must put 00 in front of their 4 digit pin which in the end did not turn out to be true but not to quibble b/c they worked in Amsterdam much to my great relief. Karyn didn't know the thoughts I was having of her financing my trip. :-)
Brought a hotel shuttle to hotel b/c I was too tired to track down buses and public transport tickets and
arrived . Beautiful snowy scenes of Amsterdam are enough to take your breath away. Starting to feel settled , though tired, opened the front hotel door and facng me was the longest set of stairs I had ever seen.So glad I did not have a large suitcase. I do not find the reviews by the American travellers to be accurate in this review. If you are fit and don't have lots of luggage it is fine. Clean and staff very helpful and view from room is specky to the max.
The bad news was Karyn being stranded in London at Heathrow and had left word that she would not arrive until the next day. That was sad b/c we leave on Tues. Good news is she did get a flight and will be here about 11 am today and we will head for the book district known as:
Het Spui Amsterdam. Book shops are centred around a square with literary cafes and several second hand bookshops. We have been told penguin hunting is good in Amsterdam so hopefully we will find something. I am just enjoying the beautiful scenery. This city must be one of the most beautiful anywhere. Stay tuned as we hear penguins are in the area and we will begin tracking them soon. Have not checked what the bag limit is but should know soon. No doubt related to money left and stairs to climb.
Also heard snowy owls have been spotted at night but not sure if we'll be lucky enough to see one of those.
