Saturday and still no new bird for the week but the staffordshirebirdingblog website made mention of a female Red-backed Shrike at Silverdale CP. It took us a bit of research to work out that CP meant Community Park and that this particular one was on the site of a now abandoned colliery near Newcastle-under-Lyme towards the north of the county. Newcastle was on our list of possible places to visit to try to win a few quid although we were due to head back to Shrewsbury in the evening for a variety of reasons.

The park proved fairly easy to find simply by finding Silverdale but the information sign in the small car park told us that we were in completely the wrong place as far as where the bird was reported from so we were soon back in the car (not a difficult decision because it was raining fairly persistently) and looking for a way to get to the top of the hill and a much closer access point. We found this after a longer drive than you might imagine (it turned out that we might have got there faster had we gone in the opposite direction, away from Silverdale) and parked amongst a dozen or so cars pulled in to the side down a narrow lane.

The walk to where the bird had been seen was only about 5 minutes. We didn't take the telescope because the rain continued but when we arrived at the site she was showing nicely on a fence and a birder who was already there let us use his 'scope for better views.

Another week, another tick :)
