In birdwatching parlance, when you got to see a bird but don't find it, you have "dipped" and that was the story of the day. I'd called in to Priorslee Flash on Friday lunchtime and had seen a rather nice juvenile Iceland Gull there. Local birders were reporting uncommon gulls at the flash on a daily basis, often rather easy to see because the lake was mainly frozen. Julie hasn't seen an Iceland Gull this year so this was our first post-breakfast stop on the way back to Shrewsbury. There were plenty of birders there but no unusual gulls.

A chap who we spoke to told us that the Bean Goose had returned to nearby Priorslee Lake, so we tried there instead. We walked all the way around the lake but we couldn't find it. Late in the week someone had reported hearing but not seeing a Waxwing at Telford Station. We went there but there were no Waxwings to be seen. Finally we stopped at the bridge over the River Severn at Atcham, near Attingham Hall to see if we could find the Barnacle Goose that was said to be in the area. No such luck and time to give up.

By way of compensation and following last week's epic failure we were up to full strength for the Beacon Quiz and came first.
