It was a little longer trip than we antiipated, but we drove out to Pisa. The kids were really keen to see the leaning tower, and Mark and I agreed that we should go.
When we got there, it was pretty special to see the tower. It is beautifully designed and on that classic tilt -- it drew us in to stare at it for a long time. But what was funny was the long line of people posing at a distance from the tower, with their hands held up at an angle to look as though they were holding up the falling tower -- the classic Leaning-Tower-of-Pisa shot! And our kids were no exception. They went through many poses at many different locations in an effort to get some great shots.
What was also funny was that one thing that people really go to Pisa to see is overshadowed -- in terms of grandeur and magnificence -- by another building, the Pisa Cathedral (Duomo). This cathedral was begun in the 11th century and is a spectacular work of Romanesque architecture.
We were glad to have seen these sights in Pisa, but were also glad to be heading back to the countryside and our quiet apartment there.
