I got up at 7, took my swimming suit, diving card, towel, and money, and went to the dive center. No problem to join at the last minute, and 30 minutes later I was on the boat.

I had been quite dissapointed with the dives in Exmouth, especially after the great sites and sights of Bali. But the first dive in Coral Bay was good: depth was only 11 meters, not too many waves or current, and a good sunshine, so the corals and fish appeared in bright colours. Lots of coral, huge fishes, and diving and swimming through or under coral reefs was great.

On the second dive, after a few minutes, another diver was signalling he had spotted a shark, but I did not see it. Just a minute later, there was a grey reef shark, somewhere between 120 and 150 cm in size, swimming a few meters from us. That was awesome. When snorkeling on the surface, everyone tends to be paranoiac and to freak out.But there, scuba diving, I just felt compelled to approach as much as possible, and the idea to be attacked did not seem too much of a problem to me. It's the same for everybody actually: when scuba diving, people are just calm and at ease.
I spoke later to Tahti, a canadian girl who was on the diveboat, but just snorkeling. She was first into the water, while we divers were getting ready. She had 4 sharks going in circles under her, and definitely she got scared. You just feel vulnerable and helpless when on the surface, and you loose this feeling on the bottom.

We spotted an octopus as well, using its cameleon skills to try to hide in a hole in a coral colony. And there were dozens of big fishes justs staying in the shadow under the boat. A few clown fish, driving out intruders, or hiding in their anemone. And one thing I can't get tired of are all the tiny colorful fishes who hide among the coral branches when you approach: you can see their face just hiding there, coming a bit more out, going a bit more in, as you get further or closer.

In the afternoon I was feeling really dizzy and weak. That must have been the fatigue added to two hours in cold water. I rested and ate, and did nothing else in the afternoon, except chating with people. I met another german girl who is travelling after highschool, without any idea of what she will study. That is a VERY common story here. There are LOADS of germans, and actually up to now I have seen more germans than kangaroos.

I met up again with Tahti, the Canadian girl from the dive boat, and with Stuart (Dutch), and organized for going together to Perth, stopping over in Shark Bay and Cervantes, to see the Pinnacles Desert.

Re: Re: Re: mise jour
