I had made very sure, with the train station employees, that I was getting a comfortable reclinable seat (upper class) to spend the night from Mandalay to Bagan. I ended up painfully sitting 8 hours on an upright, barely cushioned, asian-sized bench, which of course I shared with another passenger. My neighbourg was very nice, we discussed for a while, but then he kept falling asleep on me... I could have laid on the floor, but a few cockroaches roaming around somehow disuaded me from doing so.
Oh, and another detail: I had been told that it was a "bumpy" train... I had thought, how stupid is that? How can a train be "bumpy"? Anytime I prefer the train over the bus because it is steady-going, making it more confortable for sleeping. Well all I can say about that train is that it was a BUMPY ride!!! Up-and-down, and left-and-right, large oscillations would start every few minutes and take a minute or so to dampen back to normal. It was so bad that at times unwary sleeping people were flung on a wall or on the ground, before trying to secure a safer sleeping position.
So I had little sleep, but the sky was very clear, and the full moon was spreading a dim light on the Burmese countryside...
I arrived in Bagan at 5am, got a taxi and then a room, and went to bed at 6, after a last minute contemplating dawn taking over that full moon that celebrated my 28th revolution around the sun.
