After a night in Chaing Mai that went well into the morning hours, I skipped the 6am bus and took the 9.30 instead. I slept most of the way, but managed to wake up from time to time to admire the amazing landscapes in this part of northern Thailand: mountains and jungle at the same time.

Once there, I knew I would have been better off spending the night in Mae Sai, on the Thai side of the border, but... I needed to cross into Birma to sort my plane ticket, and also I wanted to see and feel it as soon as possible.

Once on the other side, I was helped by a local who took me to different places for accomodation, food, and plane tickets. Of course he would first take me to the places that would give him a commission, but he was very friendly and helpful, and very poor too. Our unspoken deal was that he was sticking with me and I was paying his food and drinks. We had good conversations, as his english was ok, and I began to learn my first words of Burmese.

I booked my plane for the next day, as I did not really like the atmosphere of the Tachileik. It was nothing really wrong, but in this town proclaimed "city of the Golden Triangle", people seem too used to smugglers, trafficants, and tourists coming in for just a day to renew their Thai visa. That seemed to make the prices rise too.

Anyway in the morning I caught my flight to Heho, and made my way to Kalaw.
