We finally decided to take a flight to Hanoi, paying extra (compared to the train+bus) to gain a little time in Vietnam.

We figured out that as we would be back in China anyway (to visit our Father), it was better to have as much time as possible in VIetnam, as it takes a least a couple of weeks before really feeling at ease in a a new country.

So we left the hostel after lunch, and took the bus to the airport. There we discovered that our fligh was via GuangZhou. OK. Then the flight was late. In GuangZhou was our actual leaving out from tyhe borders of China, so we had to get off the plane and go through customs... and we finally made it outside of Hanoi airport at around midnight.

Took a cab, struggled a bit to compare the hotels, as most of them were closed. We found a nice one with a 3-bed room. So off we went into Hanoi old town at one in the morning, had delicious nems, and found a giant TV with plenty of beer at hand to watch the football game.

End of the day, we are in Hanoi, the trip has started

Some pictures from our flight as we left Beijing and flew over foggy mountains

Hi

Was wondering who you flew with andif you booked in Beijing (if so was this easy to do and was their plenty of flights?) Realise it was a couple of years ago but figure travel must be a little easier now with the olympics approaching fast and all the modernisation that has occurred.
