We took a night bus from La Paz to Uyuni. I had taken it the other way 4 years ago, and remembered it was horrific.
I booked a "semi cama" bus, much more comfortable than the basic crap bolivian bus. Later I realised that the bus was not the problem. Half of the 12h journey was done on rock and sand track, inducing incredible vibrations in te bus. Everything that had been stored in the overhead compartments ended up on the floor, as well as everything that was on the seats and not held firmly. And everything on the floor was travelling, quite randomly with the vibrations, all over the bus.

One of my travel companion was complaining at the beginning that most of the bus windows were sealed closed... It happenned that the bumpy 6 hours of the journey were also the coldest hours (freezing, in fact), and any window which was not sealed was operning by itself every 5 minutes because of the vibrations. I had one such window just 1m ahead of me.
At dawn, wanting to look at the sunrise overt these desertic highlands, I had to scratch the condensation on the windows inside the bus, because it has completely frozen.

Arrived in Uyuni, I had only a few hours to organise a tour to the salar and to the altiplano, where there are beautiful lagunas with flamingos, geysers, volcanos, lunar landscapes, etc...

I left my travel companions embark on this tour, and stayed in Uyuni til I could catch the night train to Oruro, from where I took a bus to La Paz the next morning.

Those who had not been on the bus found the train a little bumpy... Those who had experienced the bus ride just found the train soooooo comfortable!

And I did not go on the Uyuni tour, because I have such grand and special memeories of this place when I went four years before, that I just decided I wanted to keep these original memories... see the pictures here.
