Most visitors to Santiago end up in the Cajon del Maipo. This is a valley on the outskirts of the city and runs for about 70km into the mountains. There are some towns along the way but the population density decreases as one goes deeper into the mountain. One of our favourite spots is El Morado but most visitors don't venture quite this deep into the Cajon. The Cascades de los Animas is a favourite place for the less adventurous.
Santiago has several ski-resorts within 30km from the city. Here are some pictures of these. For us Valle Nevado is the most attractive. Since I don't ski, I cannot judge them from this point of view.
The Rio Clarillo reserve is also very close to Santiago. Here are some easy hikes in the mountains as well as picknic spots along the river.
