San Christobal de las Casas hit the world headlines in 1994 when it was taken over by the revolutionary Zapatista movement, who held the city for thirty hours. It's mellow now, but recent history and the fact that it's now very much a backpacker's haunt give the place a very bohemian feel. Turkey and ham dinners were not the easiest to find, but the succulent lamb at a super Lebanese restaurant more than made up for it.
