The road trip begins, it's off to Oslo! We began our trip with a quick visit to the beautiful town of Orebro, the region's capital. A georgeous, well preserved traditional European town with a large centre square and intimidating castle (moat and all). Although the castle tours were in Swedish only, it should be noted how well done the exibits were for us English speaking folk. They had an entire tower, amazingly free of charge, that we could climb, with displays exhibiting the history, life in the castle, the time of the witch hunt and even the numerous sieges the castle withstood. One exhibit displaying the food tantilized not only your eyes but with a push of a button, the aroma filled the room making your mouth water too!

Orebro Castle

There really are so many beautiful cities here we feel we're beginning to be reduntant, but with the thousands of lakes in Sweden, every town is a medieval Muskoka. How could we object getting semi-lost in Karlstad, where we had lunch, with views like that?

Often, we North Americans discover little quirks as we travel foreign lands, making us question why it has to be like that. Get this. We stopped to get a bite to eat at a fairly spacious and modern McDonald's (hey, we're on vacation!). All was good until we went to the washroom only to find out that we had to pay, about $1. Enough said!

Test of Strength

The border to Norway loomed in front of us - we were looking forward to getting another stamp in our passports, even though Debbie's is barely readable after her Malaysia mishaps, but we were to be dissapointed. Even though not part of the EU, there is no (hard) working border between Sweden and Norway, so without much slowing down we sailed right in.

We arrived on the outskirts of Oslo, and even though the skies looked dangerously like rain (no surprise there) we pulled out the cosy tent and squeezed in. Alas, during the rainstorms in the night, one of the pegs came out and we had no ground sheet or outer protective shell, so saying some of us were a little damp is an understatement. But not to worry, this is our day to explore Oslo so off we go!
