The total lack of joy of getting a taxi at 3am to Quito airport and saying goodbye to May was compounded by the fun and games at Lima over my luggage.

My luggage was booked from Quito to Lima and I was told I would need to collect it and re-check it.

However when I got to Lima, I was told that I could go through the international transfer and ask the airline staff there to pick up and transfer my luggage. I did this and was surprised that the staff at Taca had no problem with that. Looking good.

Just need to wait 6 hours for the Iberia staff to open the gate and collect my boarding card.

PS my stupid travel agent had told me I was flying Lan not Taca...

It was all going so well, until I asked the Iberian check-in guy if my luggage was booked all the way to Edinburgh or just London. The answer "what luggage?" was unfortunately not a complete surprise.

At this point Taca said they didn't have my bag and didn't think it had got to Lima. I pointed out that I had spoken to their staff when I arrived and they had confirmed they had my bag. A search of the customs arrival area ensued. Taca were unable to find it until someone from Iberia went to "help" them look.

I of course was getting a bit pissed off. I haven't got many souvenirs from my 10 months but I wanted to keep the ones I did have.

I was very grateful to the check-in supervisor at Iberian, not only did he push Taca and send Iberian staff to find my bag, but with just 30 minutes to go they got it from customs on to my plane.

To my considerable surprise it made it all the way to Edinburgh, after it's unexpected tour of Lima airport. I don't know what I would have done without my handmade Amazonian blow pipe.
