As the vulcano on Iceland decided not to erupt and the airtraffic controllers in Spain postponed their strike our flight to Quito went according to plan. Early evening we arrived in Quito. Just time enough to go to a small restaurant for our first Churrasco ( steak with fried eggs, rice, chips and salad). The next day we explored the old town with it's many small streets, colorful colonial houses, churches and squares. On the way enjoying a few fruit juices of new fruits we’ve never heard of. (Guanabana and tomate de arbol = tree tomato). In the evening we explored the newly renovated street called La Ronda. Here the locals come to drink Canelado (a kind of hot fruit juice with cinnamon and offcourse agua ardiente), eat some empenadas and wander through the street. As you can imagine we had some canelados ourselves as well. The next day we went to La Mitad del Mundo.  Yes, you guessed right this is where the equator is. They made some kind of park around a statue / monument and a big yellow line to mark the equator. And as everyone else does you have to take some corny pictures with one foot in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern hemisphere. So we did that as well. We came to realise that this was actually our third crossing overland of the equator and have now crossed it overland on all three continents! We expected to have a boring Sunday in Quito as in South America usually everything is closed on Sundays. But there was a festival in the old town and all cars were banned from the centre as they do here on all Sundays. So we enjoyed the festival a bit and visited some musea. Time for a next chapter the Galapagos Islands!
