After Melbourne we flew to a place up the East coast called Ballina, half an hours drive from Byron Bay. We spent a night in Ballina and then 2 nights at Byron Bay, so I should be able to tell you what they're both like......but I've got no idea coz IT PISHED IT DOWN FOR 3 DAYS SOLID!! We were in the middle of a cyclone!!! It was ABSOLUTELY BLOWIN A GALE!! The most interesting thing about these 3 days was that one of our roomies was a Slovenian Neurosurgeon!! You don't see those everyday! Surely he could afford a better place than our shite hostel that had 4 power cuts in 2 days!!! Nice bloke though!!
Brisbane next. Australia's 3rd largest city and we liked it. It had really been hit hard by the cyclone though - the river had burst its banks and caused a bit of havoc there but they were on the mend when we were there. They have a mini beach slap bang in the middle of the city, which was interesting. However, Brisbane's Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary was where the crowd was heading!! So were we......for 'Australian animal day!' Amongst the sideshow of dingos, possums, Tazmanian devils and wombats, the Koalas took centre stage. They were all ages, mums and babies, kindergarten, adults and OAPs! They don't really do much except sit up trees and sleep for 20 hours a day! So despite being easy to photograph because they don't move, and very cute, they do get a bit boring after a while. However, Kala was made up when she got to cuddle one.....but maybe wasn't so thrilled after it kieked on her top ha ha!! UNLUCKEEEEYY!!
We were supposed to be watching a short presentation on our new furry friends, but the whole of the right side of the audience was transfixed on a massive 2ft long lizard that was roaming round. These things were all over the park, so probably weren't dangerous, but when the woman shouts "don't worry, it's only a water dragon, it is just having a nosey".....she didn't put me at ease because 1) the thing was MASSIVE and 2) BECAUSE IT'S CALLED A DRAGON!! Normal people are scared of dragons!! As it goes, nobody was harmed! Kala, of course, was listening to the presentation and learnt that Koalas are not bears as most people call them, they are in fact marsupials. Pregnancy only lasts around 35 days and out comes a tiny baby about the size of a 50p! The baby somehow manages to get itself to its mother's pouch and latches on to a teat where it stays for around 7 months!
A bird of prey show and a bit of kangaroo feeding topped off a very enjoyable, childlike day for us!! (One of the kangaroos looked like he'd been on the dumbells...!! He had huge forearms and pecs and everything....Kangaroos don't need pecs!! I wasn't feedin him!!) Back to our hostel and the air con isn't great over here so Kala is making us sleep under flamin AIRWOLF-type fans! I'm freezing cold at night!!
A bad day followed as I left my (recently topped-up!) phone on the bus AND only got 5 instead of 6 nuggets from McDonalds and it was too far to walk back!! Lesson learned.....always count yer nuggets!! Right, Noosa was next up. Another beachy town and the weather got right back on track here so was scorching! We did a bit of a peninsular walk which was gorgeous. The waves were huge so the surfers were out in force and some of them were great to watch!! After our route meandered along some proper coastline, we eventually reached a nearly-deserted laaaavely bit of beach called Alexandria Bay. Stunning! I say nearly deserted because after we tarted around taking photos we passed a man with his spuds out!!! 'Ang on a minute.....this National Park's signposted walk had only taken us onto a BLEEDIN NUDIST BEACH!! OUTRAGEOUS!! And why were there only old men??!!!! Ha ha!!! Still, that didn't spoil what was a decent day!
Next up was Rainbow Beach, just 2ish hours along the coast. Famed for their 'rainbow coloured' sand dune cliffs that back onto the beach. Again, this place was hit pretty bad but the clean up operation was well underway and we could see a real difference in just one day. The highlight here was the sunset walk to Carlo Sandblow. After going through a wooded track, suddenly it opens up and there was an almost desert-like massive sand dune seemingly plonked on top of a forest!! Very weird, but a beltin lookout point for a beautiful sunset. We saw a bit of skilled hang gliding before being pleasantly surprised at the quality of some photos of us taken by an over-the-top Aussie bloke! Thanks mate! Nice one!!
We're sleeping in dorms a lot more over here because it's a lot cheaper than having your own room and they can be frustrating at times! We were in with an American chick and a tall French chap the other night and they were on a bender this particular night!! So after we were in bed at 10.00 sharp coz we're geeks, this night was not gonna be good! Yank gets in at 2ish.....SMASHED!! Gets in bed. Leaves door open because they've only got one key. Door constantly creeks like mad and wakes me up! Lanky gets in even 'SMASHEDER'!!! Tries to wake Yank. Can't. Lanky goes somewhere else. Leaves door open too!! It creeks again for AGES!!! Aaaargh!! Lanky has no key, so I can't lock him out, so I stop the door from creeking by leaving a bag infront of it. Lanky comes back 25 mins later. Closes door. Starts texting.....loudly!! Falls asleep.....loudly!! Door clicks open! KINN EEELLLLLLLL!! LEARN TO CLOSE THE DOOR YOU CLOWN!!! I'll get up AGAIN shall I......?!!! Now I'm wide awake. Not good. I need my sleep! Then in our next hostel at a place called Airlie Beach some PUNK nicked our Weetabix even though it was bagged and tagged!!!! Kala was furious!! Whoever did it does obviously not know how much she loves her food!!

Ah, if it'd known you were going to Noosa, my auntie would have let you stay at her house! Glad you had a good time there though apart from the naked guy.
