Well apart from Kala getting nipped by a crab, me elbowing a kid right in the dish on a bus, an elderly woman doing the most BLATANT fart in a restaurant you have EVER heard, and us seeing our two fave Canadians for Christmas on the beach, not a lot else happened during our week-long spell in Hua Hin! Actually somet in Bangkok ruined the both of us (insert your own funny comment here people...!!) and we were on antibiotics during the week before Christmas but all seems to be well now, touch wood!! (Even managed to see a bit of Corrie when bed-ridden!)! Christmas on the beach.....overrated for me! It just didn't feel right! Still, Dave and Mel were excellent company as always! We stayed a couple of extra days in Hua Hin because all the buses to Krabi were booked up, but eventually got ourselves there on the overnight bus for New Years Eve. Kala 'Mother Teresa' Gibbs didn't sleep aswell as she normally does on transport even with her blanket wrapped ridiculously around her head!! Every time we nodded off, the feckin thing stopped for night food!!!! JESUS!!!
Our ladyboy checked us in (standard!), we had a wander around Au Nang beach then got ourselves out RAVIN for new year!........OK OK........it wasn't quite like that.......more like steamin after 4 drinks (again, standard!) on a rooftop bar that was ok but not as lively as back home - that 'Gangnam Style' couldn't even tempt anyone onto the floor!! I'm not throwin shapes on my own for anyone!!! A SHAMBLES of a countdown that hurriedly started from '7' saw us reach the new year and then hundreds of Chinese lanterns lit the sky which was nice....except the one that got stuck on our roof and nearly burned the place down!!! Good night though! Apologies to Morgan and co. for Kala's drunken ramblings on Skype! Nobody should be exposed to that ha ha!!!
So 3 days left in Thailand for us and we had things booked in. An elephant trek, an island tour and then a trip to Koh Phi Phi. The elephants were great! Entertaining as usual. We watched a baby one have a bit of a feed then a bath in a river, then we both had a ride on one through a jungly bit of Krabi just for an hour or so! Looking back, we are not so proud of this as our guide, who was a bit of a tool, didn't exactly treat the elephant overly nicely and was a little harsh with a wooden stick with a metal hook on the end more than once, which was a shame. It was a decent thing to experience but it made us wonder how the elephants are treated after the tourists go home. Not very well, according to some reports.
Our island tour started off terribly!!! Bus was late......we were last on......not enough life jackets.....the boat was awful......a woman the size of a wardrobe kept blocking any view we had.....the first island was shit ('Chicken Island').....the 2nd islands were shit ('Tup' and 'Mor').....then it bleedin tipped it down....the 'snorking' was rubbish!! Aaargh!! We just couldn't catch a break!! Finally a bit of joy as we had a cracker of a feed on the 3rd island ('Poda') which was nice and then the sun came out a bit! Result!! Then finally to our final island which was decent ('Phranang Cave Beach'). It was your typical beautiful beach.....white soft sand, clear blue water, carst landscape all around......and a 'penis shrine' in the cave at the end of the beach!!! WHAT THE F....???.......Why spoil a nice beach by doin that?!!!! Silly! Still, reasonable day overall.
Last up, a trip to Koh Phi Phi Islands, famed for the setting of the film 'The Beach'. First up was another island called 'Bamboo Island'. Lovely, but cloudy! Then we snorkelled (pronounced properly today) in Koh Phi Phi Don Island which was great actually.....loads of colourful tropical fish to see! Very good. But it was Koh Phi Phi Leh that stole the headlines. First we saw a gorgeous lagoon and then went to the actual setting of the film on Maya Bay. If there were no boats here, it was deserted and the weather was sunny, this place would be absolute paradise!!! It's GORGEOUS!!! However, it was full of boats, PACKED, and it bleedin PISHED IT DOWN.....all of which took the edge of it a bit ha ha!!! But still, the camera enjoyed itself and we got a couple of decent shots!! Some 'orrible cows nicked our seats on the way back on the boat so we had to sit outside at the front of the speedboat. It didn't matter though, coz it meant we got to feel the wind in our hair.....(???)!!!!
