We left Cape Town on Monday and headed for Hermanus, where Southern Right Whales come to live for 6 months a year. A bit of good news first...I'd got an email back from an Israeli girl with some underwater pics of the shark dive - result!! What was not a result is that in my email to her I'd called her Sharon. She wasn't called Sharon! She was called Ranat!! Easy mistake eh....??!!! Dear me! We got our first real taste of the Baz Bus today - our transport for the next 3 weeks across South Africa - and it was bang on time. It made a quick stop outside Cape Town and I nipped to the loo and Kala was given a form to fill in for her and her "husband!" ....Don't start..!! After about an hour in the Baz Bus, we changed to a COMICAL SHUTTLE bus. There was cr&p everywhere!! I felt like I was in Triggers Orion!! The driver was one of a kind....he was barely awake but managed to ramble on for another 40 minutes about all sorts of rubbish before finally getting to the hostel. Marilyn greeted us "Hi I'm Marilyn...and you already know Jan." Jan then told us he was called Jan...!
We went straight down to the beach front and no sooner had we got there we saw a huge whale breach!! Superb!! The same whale did it again and we managed to get a shot of it. We saw a few more whales in the bay during the day and Kala got a cracker of a photo of a calf whale practically waving at her! We had to wait until towards the end of the day during a chat with a professional photographer to get our second breach!! Fantastic! Dave de Beer was in his 9th season whale watching and had been there all day. The reason why I went over to chat to him was that the lense on his camera was about the length of my bloody arm! There's not a lot he couldn't see with that thing!! He showed us his book (whale pictures) and then showed us a shot he got that morning of a male whale inserting his 3 metre willy into a female whale's twinkle....I'm not even kidding!! Whale porn!! Nice bloke though..!!!
