Ok, so I've lured you in with the title, probably over-promising to be fair ha ha. We set out on Friday down to the Waterfront to catch the ferry to Robben Island...the place in which Nelson Mandela, amongst others, spent 18 years of his time incarcerated for sabotage. Nice walk to the front, but Christ you've gotta be quick when crossing the road....the green man stays green for about 1.6 seconds, then you're on your own!! The boat ride over was freezing!! Kala kindly offered some form of shelter (she was well wrapped up compared to my shorts and t-shirt) with about 15 seconds till we docked! Thanks!! Tour was interesting...first a bus journey around the island and then a tour of the actual prison by an ex-prisoner. It really hit home about how a lot of the prisoners on the island were in there simply because they were attempting to rid the barrier of blacks and whites being a separate entity. Mandela is the obvious one, but we also learnt about a chap named Robert Sobukwe - an Africanist who was sentenced following the Sharpeville massacre where police were responsible for the death of at least 67 people who were seeking to sever links with the all-white powerful government. These guys were so pivotal in making South Africa the "Rainbow Nation" it is today! Anyway, the boat ride home was a shambles (we were made to wait for ages while loads of people argued over nothing!!). That afternoon we walked up (the wrong way - cheers taxi driver!!!) 'Lions Head' - a peak not too far from Table Mountain that offered more stunning 360 degree views of the Mountain, the 12 Apostles, the Atlantic and the city. The scrambling at the top made this climb an interesting one!! Not only that, at the peak we came across our first celebrity....Nikolai...somet!! Nikolai is going to be in a film called 'The Perfect Wave' with none other than Diana Vickers...everybody's favourite X-Factor Blackburnian!! Watch out for it.....it's gonna be huge!!! That night, we had our first experience of ostrich steak at the highly recommended 'Arnolds' - cheers Scott - you're wasted as a lorry driver!! I also had a slab of chocolate cake the size of a house brick!! It beat me AND Kala. I've changed! Wow I've rambled so far. Anyway yesterday we went on a tour to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope - the South West tips of Africa. First stop was seal island (bit boring) but the second stop at Simonstown was magic. We went to a little penguin sanctuary. Some very cute penguins but one in particular took my eye....it was stood there totally still and it looked like it had been tumble-dried!! Check out the pic!! Anyway, from there we went to Cape of Good Hope first. A bit disappointing if I'm honest. My disappointment soon turned to being bleedin p@@sed off coz there was a sign where everyone was having their photo taken. You'd get behind the sign, have your photo and then move so the next person could do the same. I was next, waiting for a French girl to have her shot. She started talking to the camera.....she wasn't having a photo, she was making a video!!! YOU CAN'T DO THAT!! Get out of the way!! Clown! Anyway, got my (rubbish) photo then went up to Cape Point (which WAS spectacular)!!
It's raining today and we've got nothing to do (hence the essay!!)! Oh, one last point for the Scottish family, South Africans say 'och' in the same context as you!!! Last day in Cape Town today. We've both loved every minute and as far as holiday destinations go...you could do a heck of a lot worse!! Superb!!! Next stop Hermanus!
