We see a sign, boat tour, fishing, beer, music and dancing... that's us this afternoon! We write our names down and are told to meet back at the sign at 1.30pm. We are assured we have time to grab lunch, but Lao time to order a meal and have it served can be up to 1 hour even though the resturant is empty! The guy running the tour is a local and he knows the time delay on food and still assures us we have plenty of time. We later find our he waits until 1.30 to see who shows up then organises the tour. One of the girls who first put her name down is becoming a little irate as he is over a hour late, we laugh... typical Lao.

We were told we are going in a big BIG boat, one tiny thin long boat shows up to fit 10 westerners on, also on board is a huge sound system an esky filled with beer a small BBQ and off we go. Earlier we heard a rumour from a local that this tour was a bit of a rip off, more of a little adventure for the guys running it to get plastered and have a BBQ, but it turned out to be a very funny afternoon.

We pull up on the banks of the Mekong right beside a very large family of water Buffalo, they are not startled by our arrival, more of a nod and welcome to our sandy shores. Everybody out, boom box out, beer out and BBQ out, so I guess this isn't a boat tour afterall just a beach party.... All good let's have a few cold one's! Everybody is soon chugging down Beelao and telling funny travel stories. Not so long later another tiny boat pulls in, two local guys hop out with a bottle of Beelao but this bottle doesn't contain the same liquid we are drinking it is a bottle of REAL local Lao Lao whiskey, clear like Vodka potent like paint stripper and enough to contort any face inside out. We are handed a glass, well.... it's a plastic bottle with the bottom cut off, lid still on shaped like a wine glass but not quite as elegant. This was passed around the group each taking their turn to have a swig and pull a face like never seen before, this Lao Lao is super strong, not like the shop stuff enough to put hairs on your chest and I'm sure mine grew just that bit longer overnight. Once the bottle is passed around until it is empty they just get back in the boat to fill it up again, another brew but different again, this one tasted just a bit more evil than the last... down it goes faces twist, warp and then return to normal with an out breath of WOOOOOHHH.

During the drinking the guys are trying to get this huge boom box cranking but the car battery they have with them isn't up for the job so it's off to a local village to borrow a battery up for the job, BOOOOOM it's off and running our guides are pissing themselves laughing and dancing, completely full of Lao Lao by this stage and the dance party starts along with the BBQ. Smiles all round. The local Buffalo must think... what are these nobs up to, like a pack loonies these humans.

We start a game of soccer after dinner, all the guys play, the girls look on laughing at our attempt at soccer, half pissed, puffing and a few of us right near the point of a quick spew, later I noticed one of our guides have a cheeky spew thinking no one had seen but it caught my eye and I let out a big belly laugh, this guy was guiding the boat back... in the dark I might add, pissed and spewing dodging rocks and small islands back to the village to drop off the battery and then return us to Don Det.

Funny afternoon, this one cost 50,000Kip each, they charge for Beerlao but the Lao Lao was a feebie. Chicken BBQ included, we were suposed to go fishing catch fish and BBQ them but that one never eventuated I don't think it was even considered as they had a big bag of chicken. We were also supplied a few plates of fruit. This little tour was booked on the sunrise side about 5-10 minute walk from the main sandy drop off point. It was a little shack hanging over the river, he aslo organises bus and other travel tours.
