Where I stayed
Hello from Thailand.
The flight in country number nine was as uneventful as one would wish. I was made a whole more bearable however by the bag of pick-n-mix we had bought with our remaining Malaysian Ringit and the views out of the window. As we passed up the Thai coastline we could see beautiful limestone cliffs and islands jutting out of the water. I was a very beautiful sight to see from the air.
We arrived in Phuket and took the 30 minute taxi ride south to Patong Beach. We had heard all the stories of this place being a chaotic array of bars, clubs and tourists, and so we were here to embrase it and have ourselves a night out. We were booked into stay at Bodega Hostel and were pleasantly surprise as we checked in to find a lovely large room, aircon and a bar down stairs. As we were planning a night out we decided that we needed to make some friends first. We headed down to the bar and got chatting to three people sat at the bar. Jevon and Mimi were both from the USA, but travelling separately, and Dom was from the UK. Being travellers we all had stuff to talk about straight away and it was good furtune that they too were up for a night out. We had some dinner across the road at a really nice little place called Pum and then wandered down into the deborchary that is Bang La Road. You hear the street before you see it, and once in view you can't miss it. It's a long street full of neon lights, loud music, hawkers and bars galor. We wandered up and down for a while to get a feel and then settled on a little Aussie bar for a few more beers. The buy-one-get-one-free cocktails over the road then drew us in before the night took a sudden turn downhill. Mimi convinced everyone that instead of just buying numerous different drinks, we should just buy a bottle of vodka and be done with it. This sounded like a great idea at the time, but it turns out it's quite a lot of vodka for five people. We draughted in some of the bar girls and before long it was gone, and so were we! I remember there being a club next and then sitting in a bar watching the Champions league final. Alex and Mimi hung around for a while before calling it a night. I stayed with Dom, who i didn't envy as he was up at 7am the next morning. Fool! We had lost Jevon a while ago, but he was doing fine. Thanks to the football final going all the way to penalties, I didn't stagger into bed until 5am.
The next morning Alex and Mimi had for some reason thought it would be a good idea to meet up at 10am. Upon hearing the alarm I thought this was a stupid idea and noone really complained when I suggested meeting at 1. After a few more hours sleep I was then able to drag myself out of bed for the promise of laying on a beach all day doing nothing. Jevon was back with us and the four of us took a songthaew (think a pickup truck with benches in the back and a roof) to Kaka Beach. The beach was beautiful and we had the weather for it. We got some deck chairs and were straight into the beautilful blue sea. The water was cool and refreshing and as I floated on the waves I could feel my hangover washing away. The rest of the day was the basic beach day, with a bit of swimming, a lot of laying around reading and some food and drinks. The evening we sat in the bar with Jevon and Mimi and had a few beers before calling it a night. The next morning we got up and met the other two for breakfast. They were off to Phi Phi today and we had arranged to meet them there tomorrow. Me and Alex said good bye and then spent the day wandering around Patong and it's many markets. I have only been in Thailand a day or two but already I'm getting bored of people constantly shouting "Massaaaaaaage" at me or asking why I don't want to buy a suit. I have also decided that the massage ladies sound like clucking chicken when they shout. It now makes me and Alex laugh when we hear it.
Phuket had been as we had expected and fulfilled our need for a drunken night out. We have made a couple of great friends in Mimi and Jevon and we're looking forward to meeting up with them again tomorrow in Phi Phi. We're getting the boat out there in the morning, so hopefully the weather behaves itself and we get a nice crossing.
A nice short one for you all today. I'll make up for it next time.
Hope you're all well.
