What I did
Climbed a Volcano

Hello all!

Here is our entry from the moon or should I say Mount Bromo.

We took the long way round to get to Mount Bromo via Yogjakarta and Surabaya (a city where you won't want to stay too long). The main reason for doing this was to take a train and avoid the notorious Indonesian driving. The trains in Indonesia are not too bad. We have certainly had worse train trips on our travels.

We made it to our guesthouse around midday. It was in a village just down from Mount Bromo and within the first 5 minutes of arriving we had booked a motorbike tour to the volcano for the afternoon. 2 hours later we were on our way, riding along beautiful mountain roads passing fertile fields of vegetables, fruits and tobacco. When we got to the edge of the volcano, a guy sold us some dust masks saying that it gets very dusty by the volcano. I thought it was a con at first until we hit the "sea of ash". My god the ash / dust was everywhere! It was the best 50p we have spent. As soon as the bikes were on the ash, we no longer were riding on bikes we riding toboggans! The bikes were slipping and sliding all over the place. Thankfully our riders were experienced and we made it to the edge of the volcano in one piece. I think if this was at the start of our trip we would never have accepted riding across that sea of ash on the bike. Now we are so chilled we actually enjoyed the thrill of sliding about.

It is so hard to describe the landscape that lay before us. As I have said in the video clip ( see one day on Facebook) it was like being on the moon. It is the most surreal area we have visited. You have 3 active volcanoes surrounded by this grey sea of ash with hardly anything else in sight. It is definitely one of the highlights from the past 14 months and a must see if you are on Java. It took us about an hour to get to the crater rim. Well it took me an hour, Karen cheated by going up by horse! Amazingly we had the place to ourselves for the first 30 mins as most people come to Mount Bromo to see it at sunrise which we were doing the following day. It felt strange to be sitting on the edge of an active volcano looking down into the crater watching smoke come out of it! One little murmur from our volatile friend and we would have been toast! Yet even at it's most destructive form nature creates things of beauty. Mount Bromo we salute you. Now over to another hot and fiery thing: Karen!

Now you're making me sound like a chilli!

There are very few things that I'd willingly wake up for at 3o'clock in the morning.  Especially when the event also involves hiking uphill. The view of Mount Bromo at sunrise, is top of that list.

Every single person we met in Wonotoro, a small village close to the famous volcano, was doing the same tour we were. A jeep pick-up at 4am, a 30 minute drive to a mountain and then a 30 minute STEEP hike up said mountain and lo and behold we were met with this view:

Trust me, the pictures don't do it justice. It's a view best seen by your very own eyes, a view that will be etched in my memory under the section 'most awe inspiring moments'.

Wow!

Just in case you're not convinced, here's a few more....

The tour also included a drive up to the crater of the mountain and a hike up to the very top. We were so glad we'd done this bit on our own, on motorbikes the day before. There must have been at least 200 people climbing up in the morning, whilst we'd had the smoking crater all to ourselves the day before!

Being the hardy travellers that we are, on that same day we caught a 14 hour bus onto our next destination. The wonderful, island of Bali. We'd decided to spend our first few nights on the island in the famous town of Ubud, I couldn't wait to see what the fuss was all about.

See you when we get there

Love Karen and Paul
