Guimaras, Guimaras, described by our guidebook as a tropical paradise. A group of islands floating in pristine turquoise waters, quiet, remote and absolutely stunning.

On our way there we had to spend a night in Bacolod where we found out, 2 days too late that Osama Bin Laden had been killed. One of the biggest news events of the decade and we'd totally missed it!! In fact when we first saw it on the net we thought it was a joke and didn't give it much attention until we read the same news on the BBC. Two hours later, a couple of travellers we'd met along the way came up to us all wide eyed saying 'Bin Laden was killed!!' At least someone got there later than us.

As most resorts in Guimairas are not accessible by land, we spent our last leg of the journey on a small boat sailing in between gorgeous tropical islands dotted with white sand beaches. It was quite surreal. As we approached our chalets we got very excited. We totally forgot how pissed off we were 20 minutes before because the resort manager had forgotten to send someone to pick us up, leaving us stranded on a hot pier for an hour. As we saw the chalets perched on top of the rocks overlooking the beautiful sea we were praying that this really was our resort.

Once we actually made it to our chalet the interior slightly dampened our enthusiasm. The place was full of cracks, broken windows and looking very unloved. Oh well, who cares when we're in such a beautiful setting.

We went down by the beach and noticed that the other guests on the resort were two couples formed by two old European men and two gorgeous girls which looked highly dubious. We actually joined them both for dinner that evening as our resort had organised a buffet and made us sit all next to each other. I felt slightly uncomfortable at first but ended up enjoying chatting to one of the couples.

The trouble started when we went back to our chalet and found a huge cocoon on our mosquito net. I have no idea what was inside it but the thing was BIG and brown and disgusting. As we got into our bed we noticed lots of tiny black dots on the sheets. Something was eating the roof above us and the dust was falling from the roof, through the net and onto our bed. Yuck! My skin started crawling with disgust. As we were trying to figure out what to do a grasshopper jumped onto our net followed by some other weird bug. I was soooooo grateful we actually had a mosquito net with us. Of course a trip to the loo resulted in the discovery of a cockroach which by now was totally expected and didn't freak me out as much. After a LOOOOOOOOOONG sleepless night (partly through the amount of life in our room and partly through the warbling of drunken people on a karaoke machine on a different resort) we woke up to find another cocoon on our net along with mouse droppings, most of which had luckily remained on the net instead of falling on us.

With less than 24 hours in this place we decided that it had beaten us. We packed our bags and left in the morning heading for tourist central and actually looking forward to tourists and shops and everything else that comes with a popular holiday destination. Our next stop was Boracay and WE COULDN'T WAIT!!!!

See you from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Lots of love
Karen and Paul
