Arrived by Flagstaff Express this morning.  Jumped straight on to a free shuttle bus that goes around the park to our lodgings.......the campground !  In no time at all we have erected our canvas house and we go straight to the rim to see the "Grand Canyon".  Walking about quickly is a little difficult at the moment, i think we are at 7000 ft and the temp at 10am was 85F.  Over the next 3 days we are going to do a number of short walks into the canyon to get us ready for the 20 mile hike over to the North rim which will be very challenging. First stop will be a walk 1.5 miles down the bright Angel trail which doesn't sound far, but we have to get out again don't forget! After that we will do a longer walk down the Hermits Trail which will take about 5 hours. The rim to rim walk will take 3 days with 2 overnight stops down on the canyon floor where the temperature will be around 110-120F by 9am which is why you have to start your hikes very early in the morning. many people have become very ill or even died due to setting off too late. We will not be making that mistake!! Before setting off we had a relaxing time on the South Rim taking in the scenery and going to a few ranger programmes.
