In order to cross the Bolivian border (due to disruptions between Chile and Bolivian locals), we had to take a timely detour by first travelling from San Pedro to Calama, Chile (2 hours). From here, we got an overnight bus to Iquique, Chile (7 hours). To leave Chile, we had to wait around the bus terminal for a few hours and then get a bus to Oruro in Bolivia. To top it off, the day after we arrived in Oruro was census day which is done only once every 12 years. We had planned on getting a bus straight out of Oruro to Tupiza, South of Bolivia to do the Salt Flats tour but this was not an option due to the census. For this one day, the whole of Bolivia shuts down. No shops, hotels, businesses etc are open and anyone found on the streets could be fined. Hence, on arrival in Oruro we booked ourselves straight in to a hostel with cable tv and spent the following day glued to the television. The day after the census, we got a bus straight out of Oruro to Tupiza.
