We decided to take the bus to the north of the island, specifically Santa Cruz, the capital and largest city (about 200,000) on the island. We caught the #110 bus at the bus depot, which is only a 15 minute walk from our condo. The toughest part was knowing when to catch it. We saw it coming but it just drove right by the designated stop. I ran to where it stopped at a stop sign and knocked on the door but the driver just shook his head. I then went and asked at the Info office if we were at the wrong stop. She said 'no - it just is going around the block'. Sure enough, 5 minutes later it was back and stopped to let us on. The 110 bus is an express bus to Sanat Cruz with no stops. Except if you'r a 5 year old boy who needs to go to the bathroom. Halfway to SC, the driver pulled over to let the boy go, after the mother talked to the driver. There were no other stops along the 45 minute drive. We were treated to somer lovely scenery, wind generators, volcanic hills and desert like plants. The highway followed the coast so the 12E ticket was worth it just for the scenery.
At Santa Cruz, we wandered the streets and ate lunch on the 7th floor of the huge El Corte Ingles department store. It certainly seemed more Spanish than the southern tip where we were staying (but no tapas restaurants on Tenerife like Madrid!) we also learned to ask for 'toilet' instead of 'washroom' or you may be directed to housewares!
For dinner, we walked along the ocean boardwalk and found a very nice restuarant called Corintes. I had the tropical chicken (curry sauce with pineapple).
