Tuesday, August 9

Today we headed east on I-80, going about 120 miles to North Platte, where we had lunch with Patty Harkreader, Jack's wife. Jack was out of town, but we had a pleasant visit with Patty and caught up on their lives before we said goodbye and headed down highway 83 for 69 miles to McCook. In McCook we left our trailer in a small city owned free campground with only electric hookups and drove over to Joyce Beideck's house. Joyce's husband Dick died three months ago and we wanted to spend an evening with her. We had a great visit and after a good dinner (and more visiting) we said goodbye about 9pm and went back to our trailer and turned in for the night. Shortly before 1am the truck alarm went off! I could not see any activity in the area, briefly went out and determined that nothing had happened to the truck. When we finally settled in Pat had time to tell me that she was in the process of heading to the bathroom and when she steadied herself in the dark by placing her hand on the arm of the sofa, the alarm went off! I asked, "Where is your purse?" Well, to make a long story a little shorter, we figure her car key remote, which was in the purse, must have somehow been squeezed when she touched the sofa and that is what sounded the alarm. We tried to go back to sleep...
