I stayed in St. Ann's, at the foothills of the rainforest and Queens Park Savannah. The hotel was in a wonderful setting. I was able to observe jungle life while having breakfast each morning outside, and the location is the closest safe neighborhood to Port of Spain. The Queen's Park Savannah is called the world's largest roundabout and the center for Carnival in February. The Botanic Gardens carry plenty of birdlife.
Asphalt (Pitch) Lake in La Brea is the largest tar pit in the world, now at about 115 acres. It is shrinking as it moves regularly. The blob will swallow and regurgitate anything, and you really have to follow a guide, or you may get sucked into the "Mother of the Lake" blob.
Caroni Swamp is the site of the Scarlet Ibis birds, as they arrive in flocks each evening from Venezuela, to nest for the night.
