The Meseo Dell'Ara Pacis was something I stumbled upon, never really knowing much about it.  The museum is the first modern architectural work built in a historic center of Rome.  The enclosure of the Ara Pacis was designed by Richard Meier & Partners Architects.

The Ara Pacis was constructed in 13 BC, in honor of Augustus's return from Spain and Gaul where he built new roads and founded new colonies there for the Empire.  It was moved in 1938 to the the pavillion on Via di Ripetta, from its original location on the Via Flamina, because it had been buried by floods, sediment and neglect.  Because of damage from modern pollution at its 1938 location, it was restored again and moved to it's current place, in a modern museum complex which is stable, well conditioned, and even equipped with an anti-earthquake system.
