What I did
Swimming in tha Lago Atitlan

Flag of Guatemala  , Western Highlands,
Thursday, May 26, 2011

Panajachel is a town in the southwesternGuatemalan Highlands at Lago Atitlan, in thedepartment of Solola at an altitude of 1,597 meters. It was a lot warmer here than in Xela and there was also a lot more of oxygen, probably because of the lake.

It is the largest of the twelve towns and became a centre for the tourist trade of the area as it provides a base for visitors crossing the lake to visit other towns and villages. Panajachel's economy is primarily based on tourism. And that is what you can see here, a lot of shops and street vendors. A little bit to mush because the street vendors don't let you go.

I told you already about the boy who took the food that we left for the dogs, but here is another amazing story that I have witnessed, there was a guy walking in a side street. A European (later I heard that he was from England) with a lot of tattoos. Suddenly an other man (a local) came in front of him. I heard the local ask if he wanted some weed. The Englishman told him no and wanted to continue his walk. Out of nowhere the local put a knife under the nose of the Englishman, but luckily there was police nearby, they came immediately and the local run away.

Off course I had also pleasant moment at Panajachel. I had a beautiful swim in the lake. The weather and the water were really nice. But i was also glad that i could continue my trip.
