We decide to do another driving trip which would take us across the border from Italy to Switzerland. Switzerland has a reputation as being an expensive place, but our driving tour was to be relatively short – only about five days, and everything we had heard about the scenic beauty of the place convinced us that it would be worthwhile.

With this in mind, we hired a small fiat 500 and set off from Milan. Unfortunately, 'Bella' – our GPS lady - let us down at the worst possible time – as we were trying to navigate our way out of the city centre. After a few laps of the same city block and a few choice words from Steve (aimed at the non functioning satellite technology), we found the freeway and headed north.

Our first stop on this trip was Lake Como, Italy, which was only about fifty kilometres down the road. All Aussies will know that this is considered to be a very short drive and, with Bella finally doing her thing, we found our way there without further incident.

This is a truly beautiful part of the world with a stunning crystal clear lake and dramatic mountain peaks rising from the water’s edge. The shoreline has numerous villages and towns around its perimeter. We arrived about midday and enjoyed a great lunch sitting out in the winter sunshine just enjoying the views. The old town was also explored, but it was very quiet at this time of year. To complete our first day there, we took a very long walk around the lake, just enjoying the amazing architecture of the many villas and hotels which were dotted around the lake’s edge.

Our second day at Lake Como saw us catching a ferry to the nearby village of Bellagio and taking a funicular ride to another small village which sits on the cliff top overlooking the lake. It was also Steve’s birthday so we wanted to make it special. Our lunch at Bellagio and dinner at Lake Como topped off a really relaxed day – made especially lovely by a light sprinkle of snow as we walked back to our hotel.

Happy birthday Steve - we tend to think that there could not be a more beautiful place in which to enjoy a quiet celebration.
