Arrived safely in Rome after a comfortable and scenic train ride from Innsbruck. The journey took us through more Alps and snow and we made our connection in Bologna without incident. We are always wary of train changes because we worry that it will be a mad rush to make our connecting train with all of our luggage but this one worked out beautifully.

We stayed in Rome in August 2011 and loved it. It was included on our itinerary this time so that we could meet up with our son Leigh and his fiancée Layla. It was to be their first visit to that city and we were only too happy to be their 'tour guides' for a few days. Obviously this meant that we repeated some of our previous highlights but it was really fun to be sharing it with some of our family.

After meeting them at the station (they had come in from Paris) we grabbed a taxi to the Intercontinental Hotel which is located just above the Spanish Steps. We had stayed there on our last visit and found it to be a great place – perfect location and friendly staff.

Our first meal in Rome on the evening of our arrival was an anti climax. We were all hungry after our journeys and probably did not pay enough attention to our chosen eating place. We are happy to report that the mistake was not repeated – the rest of our meals were quite good. Rome is generally more expensive than Germany had been and therefore in terms of ‘value for money’, was certainly not as good as we had become used to. We didn’t really mind because we were having such a fun time with Leigh and Layla.

We all went to the Colosseum, the Vatican (including the Sistine Chapel) and just walked the streets of beautiful Rome. We were able to compare Rome in summer and now in winter – although the winter weather we experienced was perfect – clear blue sky days with just a chill in the air.

Our four days together went too fast but we also got to see the photographs of their travels (they had been to Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, London and Paris before meeting us) and, of course, we got to see first hand, Layla’s engagement ring which had been given to her in San Francisco.

Too soon, we had to bid them farewell. They had come to the end of their trip and were flying home to Brisbane and we were left to continue making memories on our own. The night train to Palermo (Sicily) awaited us.
