Deciding on a quick side trip to Krakow Poland, we soon realized we had made our first travel mistake.....we hadn't planned to stay here long enough. We arrived late on Thursday night after a plane delay in Berlin (our first flight internally for the trip). Met by our driver, he got us to the travel centre where we picked up the keys to our apartment for the two night stay here, only to be told there was a slight problem....ah oh!!!  Never worry, the original apartment had no heating working so they had arranged new accommodation.

Opening the door to the new appartment we were stunned - huge was the initial assesment, then wow - what a great sight looking right over the Main Square and all the Christmas Markets. In fact the place could sleep at least six people. Win for the good guys and a great thanks to our friends at Old City Apartments.

A quick breakfast and off on our tour of Auschwitz/Birkenau..Expecting this to be a very moving experience, we were not let down. Our guide for the tour provided a beautiful balance of moving story telling and indepth knowledge of the persecutions and horrors that Auschwitz/Birkenau are renowned for. Her delivery ensured you understood what this place was all about without becoming an overly morbid depressing tour.

We will never forget walking into one of the rooms which houses human hair, Two tonnes of it are on display. The hair had been shaved from the bodies of those who lost their lives here. This was only a small amount that had been found after liberation, as the hair was used in a variety of ways to support the German war effort  . There are many more such displays throughout the tour which remind you that these atrocities were carried out by educated proffesional people.

Back in Krakow, Friday night was back in full swing, Christmas carols, rock bands & school kids singing, resounded around Main Market square. The Christmas market was in full swing but the Poles don't drink Gluiewien in the open as much as the Germans. The market itself was broad in the range of items they sold and of course there were the BBQ's where Steve ate a huge Polish sausage while Del did the right thing and had a plate of grilled vegetables. Steve thought about having a crack at the biggest Kebab we ever saw but knew it would be too much for even him.

What is amazing is the prices. We had a great two course meal with drinks all for approximately $A20.00.

There was so much more to see in this fantastic university town but time limited us to briefly discovering what we could in the in the Old Town. We missed  seeing the ghetto's and where Shindler of  the Schindlers List movie had his factory. So much more to see but sadly, not enough time. A great place to visit...... put it on the list and allow yourselves plenty of time to see all it has to offer!
