We had an interesting start to our time in Dusseldorf. As we are only staying for one night we had chosen a hotel near to the train station. Therefore, no taxi needed. We donned our various bags and backpacks and headed for the hotel, not taking into account the size of the underground station. This proved to be a mistake as we went out the wrong exit and headed away from the direction we should have been going in. Okay, no big deal until the laces on my new hiking boots got caught up and I got a close up view of those cobblestone paths I so love! Yes, I fell over and have a skinned knee which some of my year five students would be proud of
Regardless of my undignified entry to this city, Dusseldorf is a great place. In our limited time here, what we have seen of it, is impressive. We spent a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon in the old town, exploring yet another Christmas Market, and the views of the Rhine, amongst a whole throng of locals. Of course we had to intersperse this with eating and drinking and watching soccer in a cosy pub!
We head to Hamburg today, where we will spend the next three days. Having bought a rail pass to get us through the first two months of our travels, we will again experience the comfort of the European train system. Our rail pass covers us for ten days travel within that time period throughout the bordering countries of Germany, Austria and Italy. We have planned for this to get us well into southern Italy by the end of January.
