Another long driving day, combined with a stop in the dreary town of Springbok and a border crossing into Namibia (a rather painless one though), equalled the desire to burn off some steam. At 5 pm, when we arrived at our campsite on the banks of the Orange River, we were all ready to relax. What better way to do that than to play some drinking games and sample some of the region's fine alcoholic beverages!
The warming of the blood was also necessary after our first frigid evening of camping. Keeping in mind that it is Africa's winter at the moment, I still could not even fathom just how cold it would get at night without a decent sleeping bag. Needless to say, for our second evening in the great outdoors, I was much better prepared. Armed with four layers of upper body garments, pants tucked into 2 pairs of socks, a freshly purchased blanket and a tuque, I was certain that I would now be protected from the harsh ravages of the African winter...but it was not to be! (As the trip progressed and we neared the equator, I began to sleep peacefully at night, because I was no longer troubled by a burning sensation in my frozen toes...). Visitors to Africa in winter: BEWARE...it gets bloody cold at night, bring a good sleeping bag!!!
