Where I stayed

Well, I intended to take the train. In Sri Lanka, few people you ask would know the train schedules... at least in the circles I move, people do not travel by train. In any case, the Lighthouse manager Chamin was kind enough to arrange a transport from the hotel, which is just outside Galle on a rock. As soon as I came on the platform, I was informed by the station manager (who spotted me as a Suddha, a "white man"), that the train from Matara would have at least one hour delay.
This meant: I would miss the dance performance in Colombo.

So he recommended that I took a taxi!!! The next best option: an intercity bus. It's not what you expect when you travel in other countries. The busses are old and rotten, and the seats are sized for people less than 5 feet. I crossed the station plaza and road, and waited for the next best bus. With all the "help" from the station chief and a lot of talking, I was finally pushed into a bus and ripped off of 700 Rupees in the turmoil, without receiving a ticket... In any case: here I was on the bus to Colombo! I had, in all my years of knowing Sri Lanka, not travelled by bus for 23 years. Sitting in one of the seat rows at the back, I did not notice much of the road traffic, held on to my seat and was rushed back in less than 3 hours. The result: On arrival, I was half dead and had a stiff neck. Though I was "on time" (miraculous), I did not fancy going out...

And the same evening I returned to Galle with Tharushi in my good old van.
