Where I stayed
We woke up at 5am at our extremely noisy Maze Hostel in central Sydney, didn't get much sleep last night. Everything is still dark outside when we found a taxi on George street, and paid the usual $30 to get to the Sydney airport. Our Jet Star flight at 9am was on time.
Jet Star is the discount Australia airline, price for a return tickets to Singapore was fair, around $1000 during high season. But we soon found out, everything else was NOT included. We even have to pay for water on board the flight, which was annoying. Considering this is an international flight between Sydney and Singapore, one would imagine the airline would provide basic needs. So not only was food not available at all (you must pre-book meals in advance), water, pillows, earphones etc. all cost extra. What are we flying? African Airlines? What is next? Passengers have to pay for toilets on board? This is total BS. Me and Juliette were shocked !! When we flew the discount Sky Airline in Chile last year from Santiago to Punta Arenas, everything was normal. Why is this Australian airline being such a scrooge.
Anyways, at least our flight was on time, and upon arrival, there was a monsoon rain welcomed us to Singapore. We checked in at the Fragrance Hotel in the Geylong district of Singapore. It is located in the Red Light district, but the hotel itself is very well kept, and at less than $50 per night, we were satisfied. First thing first, taking care of our empty stomachs, we haven't eaten since this morning. Singapore is well known for its delicious street foods, so getting some local street eats is a must, which can be an adventure in South East Asia.
As soon as stepped out the door, there was a little culture shock for both of us. This is the first time for me and Juliette in Singapore and even though we are both accustomed to Asian cultures, Singapore is different. With a mix of South Asian, Chinese and Malaysian migrant workers, Geylong district is colorfully exciting at night. Neon lights filled the streets, the traffic was chaotic, and the smell of food everywhere. Everything was exotic and confusing at the same time, but we did find a food court, and it was delicious (our only meal of the day).
