RIP, our suitcase wheel. We you a lot already :-(. More on this later.
So today we woke up to catch our flight from Prague to Venice. The flight itself was bittersweet. Sweet cause of our amazing view of the Alps from the airplane. Bitter because the plane was designed to sit people 5'10 uncomfortably, and since I am two inches taller than that, my knees were attached to the seat in front of me the whole time. I don't even know how people who are like 6'3 would fit! But at least the flight was short...
So we land in Treviso airport and the mission becomes: find our hostel. We found this super cheap place with great reviews (only €40 a night), but not the easiest place to get to. First we take a bus from Treviso to Mestre Train Station, no problems there. But then we had to take some local bus an indeterminate number of stops and then walk some unknown distance to get to the place. So we took the safe approach and took a cab, which wasn't too expensive anyway. We get there and end up having to walk about several hundred yards over gravel, which probably contributed killing our suitcase wheel, and arrive at our lodgings. Our ridiculously tiny lodgings, which also had a lofted bed that none of us could figure out how to get into. We found a ladder, but couldn't get it out of the closet. Furthermore, since this place wasn't in Venice proper, we'd have to get there somehow. The hostel provided a shuttle, but only at three specific times in the morning and evening, so could take a lot of our time just either traveling or worrying about traveling. Given the conditions, and the small magnitude of the sunk cost, we decided to search for a new hotel.
This place at least had free wi-fi, so we were able to get to hotels.com and trip advisor to check out available hotels and read reviews. We found one that looked pretty good to us from what we could tell (tho up from the €40 per night to like $280), but at least it was IN Venice and larger. So we ditched the hostel, and started our journey into Venice proper. Not so easy. First we had to walk to the nearest bus stop (over half a mile away, maybe even a full mile, and then our now overheated from gravel suitcase took an awkward bounce off a curb, jamming the wheel, leaving us to carry a suitcase that doesn't roll well) and had to wait a while for it to get there. Maybe thirty minutes after the bus shows up, we were finally there. Venice! Now all we had to do was get to our hotel. Easy enough tho, the hostel had given us some info on vaporetto transportation and a map. So we just had to hop on the right one....
Well that wasn't so easy either. We ended up getting on the wrong one for two stops first, cause the hostel map's info was very confusedly written. So again, took us a whole hour just to get to the correct vaporetto stop. Then it was a short walk to the hotel, but since we had to cross bridges, and bridges have stairs, that meant carrying our suitcase over each one which wasn't even close to pleasant.
But finally, finally we arrived at our... Suite! Here we have a two floor, huge, air conditioned, very comfortable suite. It may have taken us six hours since landing in Treviso to get here (not kidding, landed at around 1130, and got here around 1750 or so), but within two minutes of entering our new room, we were all thrilled and had no doubt we made the right choice.
So really there was another death in Venice today besides our suitcase: our afternoon. But we're here and looking forward to a great three days in this beautiful city!
