Continuing onwards after our trip to the TV tower and our snack of currywurst, we decided to go to the DDR museum, since it was close by and is advertised in our hotel as the most interesting museum in the world. None of us had any idea what DDR was, since none of us connected DDR to being how one would say GDR in German. So this turned out to be a museum about life in East Germany from 1948 to 1990.
While most interesting it was not, it was a pretty cool museum. It was small, but we could walk around and learn about all the facets of life in that country during that time: what they wore, where they worked, what their schooling was, what music they listened to, newspapers they read and TV shows they watched. There was even a model house. For me, it seemed a lot like the physical representation of what my parents had told me life in the Soviet Union was like. I guess that's not really surprising. It's still pretty crazy that this was really only twenty years ago...
After the museum, we went to grab some dinner on our way back to the Brandenburg Gate, since we wanted to see it at night. We stopped at the first restaurant we saw, called Jedermann's. We wanted to order beer, since it's soooo cheap, and while flipping through the menu we noticed at they have drinks which are like beer+fanta and beer+sprite! So Kelly and I got those, while Tina just got a normal beer. Very interesting taste, I'm not sure I liked it tho. Food itself was great and plentiful.
At night, the Brandenburg Gate looks even more majestic lit up. We took pictures in front of it as best we could, then walked over to the Reichstag thinking that at 9pm on a Tuesday there wouldn't be much of a line to get to the roof. Silly us. Forty minutes later we finally get in, learn about the history of the Reichstag through a series of photographs, and go up to the top of the dome to get a great panoramic view of Berlin at night. It was definitely worth the wait.
So that was our first day. Tomorrow we're going to take a tour of a concentration camp and maybe do some souvenir shopping if we find somewhere cheap.q
